  Exploring BurgenlandUseful details

The most Eastern Austrian province has a distinct Hungarian feature and the influence of the Turkish occupation is still present.

The travellers come here for Neusiedler Lake beaches and for region wines.

One could believe that its name of the region, Burgenland, comes from “burgen”, meaning castles, but the reality is that, even the Austrians can not explain the real origins of this name - visit villa rentals.

The capital, Eisenstadt is small having about 10 000 of inhabitants. It is dominated

by the name of the most famous peoples of the region: the Eszterházy and Haydn.

The best way to visit the city is by foot. All the important touristic marks are

easy to explore. The city is dominated by the magnificent Schloss Eszterházy a middle – age fortress. Next to the castle, in the beautiful Haydngasse, there is Haydnhaus where the famous composer lived from 1766 to 1778.

Close to Eisenstadt, only 70 km far from Vienna, on the bank of the Neusiedler Lake, you will find a region where 300 species of rare birds are living. There are here 15 natural reservations you can choose from, a real paradise. The sun lovers would be happy to find out that in some of the communities next to the lake, the average temperature in July and August is only one degree smaller than the one on the French Riviera. This Mediterranean feature, combined with the various salty levels of ponds and lakes, supply ideal conditions for a unique flora and fauna.

The main road around the lake goes from Eisenstadt to North-East and comes in viticultural village Donnerskirchen. The ones that choose to travel here by the middle of April and in early May will enjoy a splendid natural show offered by the thousand of blossom cherry trees on the slopes of Leitha Mountain.

Burgenland is one of the regions with the highest wine production in Austria. Every year, on 11 November the inhabitants celebrate the Saint Martin – the protector of the region, by eating roasted goose and tasting the red new wine.

The travellers can visit here “the Wine Forum”, for further documentation about the  viticulture in the region. In so called “Wine Arch” many of vineyards offer more than hundred of wines specialities. A Wines Exchange takes place and thousands of bottles of rare wines are stocked.

All the villages around the lakes have facilities for landing boats and bicycles, navigation, windsurfing, camping and swimming.

In Breitenbrunn, next to the Northern end of the lake there is a clock tower, dating from Turkish period, that offers from its balcony a splendid view of the lake. The baroque picturesque farms fulfil the image of this village placed on the meadows around the water. Tourists will find here a yachts fleet and a windsurfing school.

In the Eastern side of the lake, there is Rust known all over the world as summer home for storks families. A mail office of Storks was set up here, in collaboration with International Found for Nature (mail code A-7073). It is open all the year long and the special stamps representing a stork are  in great demand. But Rust is well known not only for storks but also for wines. Non of the other viticultural areas of Austria has such a large number of high quality of wines. Each cork having the mark “R” is a guarantee that the wine origin is Rust.

In Burgenland operate “The Burgenland Wines Academy”.
